How VERIFY STEAM Integrating Indicators Work

When exposed to a steam sterilization cycle, steam penetrates the polypropylene cover contacting the steam sensitive chemistry within. Exposure to steam lowers the melting point of the specially formulated chemistry and as the chemistry melts it soaks into the wicking paper and runs up the strip, turning it dark. The rate at which the line moves has been correlated with the biological indicator’s inactivation.

The integrating indicator confirms that all the critical steam sterilization parameters have been met when the dark line has traveled the length of the strip and entered the “ACCEPT (OK)”” window. Once the dark line has entered the “ACCEPT (OK)” window, the critical parameters have been met.
